What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)?
IBD is a chronic condition that refers to disorders causing inflammation of the digestive tract. The two most common forms of IBD are:
- Ulcerative Colitis: This condition involves inflammation and ulcer formation along the lining of the colon and rectum.
- Crohn’s Disease: This condition causes deeper inflammation that may affect any part of the digestive tract, most often the small intestine but also the large intestine and, less commonly, the upper gastrointestinal tract.
IBD symptoms vary depending on the severity of inflammation and where it occurs. Symptoms of both Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease typically include abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fatigue, and weight loss.
The goal of IBD treatment is to reduce the inflammation that triggers symptoms. In the best cases, this may lead not only to symptom relief but also to long-term remission and reduced risk of complications.
