hATTR Amyloidosis

What is hATTR Amyloidosis?

An often-misdiagnosed disease, hATTR amyloidosis is a rare, inherited, rapidly progressing condition caused by a mutation in the transthyretin (TRR) gene. This mutation causes the TRR protein that is made in the liver to be created with misfolds, leading to an accumulation of amyloid deposits (proteins and peptides) on multiple tissues including the heart, nerves, and digestive system. Ultimately it can lead to debilitating and life-threatening symptoms such as:

  • Pain & Weakness of the limbs
  • Swollen legs
  • Heart-related issues
  • Kidney dysfunction
  • Excessive sweating, shortness of breath & dizziness
  • Gastric symptoms-nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & constipation
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Glaucoma, blurry vision, floaters in the eye
  • Dementia

hATTR amyloidosis is a hereditary autosomal dominant disease, meaning you only need to inherit one copy of the mutated TTR gene to present the disease. As a multisystemic disease, presentation of symptoms and the severity will vary from person to person. The onset of hATTR amyloidosis can also vary, usually showing up in adults in their mid-20’s to mid-60’s.

How Can hATTR Amyloidosis be Treated?

hATTR Amyloidosis can be treated with infusion therapy using the infusion medications, Onpattro and Amvuttra.

Infusion therapy or injection medicine is when medication is administered directly into the bloodstream.

Onpattro works by decreasing the number of TTR proteins that are made within the liver. It reduces the number of amyloid deposits that accumulate on tissues. As a result, patients experience fewer symptoms, and slow the progression of the disease.

Treatments last 80 minutes and are administered every three weeks.
