What is Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy?

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, also known as CIDP, is a rare and progressive neurological disorder. CIDP is closely related to Guillain-Barre syndrome, and it is considered the chronic counterpart of that acute disease. Caused by an autoimmune response, CIDP initiates the body’s own immune system to attack and destroy the protective coverings surrounding the peripheral nerves. This damage causes disruption between signals from the brain to parts of the body; primarily the arms and legs, leading to weakness and loss of sensation.

Symptoms of CIDP include:

  • Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Slow reflexes
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Double vision
  • Exhaustion

CIDP is more common in older adults. Manifesting first as a lack of coordination, then progressing into a decline of motor functions. If left untreated chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) can lead to permanent disability.

How is Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy treated?

Although there is no known cure, treatment for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy is possible with the help of infusion therapy. At Infusion for Health, we use the intravenous immune globulin (IvIg) medication, Gamunex-C for the treatment of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.

Created from donated plasma, infusion therapy of Gamunex-C delivers healthy antibodies intravenously, helping to block the body’s immune and inflammation process. Treatments typically take place every 3-4 weeks depending on severity. With early intervention, reversal of damage and remission from CIDP is possible.
