What is Lupus?

Lupus also known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy tissues and organs.

Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many of the body’s systems, including:

  • Joints
  • Skin
  • Kidneys
  • Blood Cells
  • Brain
  • Heart
  • Lungs

Some signs and symptoms of lupus include:

  • Skin rashes, most commonly a butterfly-shaped rash across the nose and cheeks
  • Joint and muscle pains
  • Fevers higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Chest pains
  • Hair loss
  • Photosensitivity
  • Kidney issues
  • Mouth sores
  • Fatigue

Causes of lupus are still not fully known. Some factors that can contribute to the development of lupus include:

  • Sex- primarily affecting women
  • Age- lupus symptoms typical develop between 14-40 years of age
  • Race/ethnicity- lupus is more common in people of African, Hispanic/Latin, Asian, Native American, Hawaiian and Pacific Island descent.

If left untreated lupus can be fatal.

How Can Lupus Be Treated?

There is no known cure for lupus. Treatments currently focus on managing patients’ symptoms and minimizing flare-ups. If you are living with lupus symptoms and are not experiencing relief with other medications, talk to your doctor about infusion therapy- an intravenous administration of medications. With infusion therapy patients experience faster more effective relief from lupus symptoms than with oral medications.

At Infusion for Health, we administer two infusion therapies to lupus patients. One medication we use to treat patients with lupus is Benlysta. Treatments typically last one hour every two weeks for six weeks, followed up with maintenance dose every four weeks.

In August 2021, the FDA, approved Saphnelo the only new medicine in over a decade for lupus patients. Saphnelo is administered as an intravenous infusion over a 30-minute period, every 4 weeks.
