CONDITION AND TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Asthma

While most chronic conditions bring significant challenges, asthma can be especially scary. Asthma attacks can come on unexpectedly, interfering with simple activities. The most extreme asthma attacks can require hospitalization and life-saving interventions. This leaves many asthma sufferers always worried about when the next severe attack will happen. Since asthma has no permanent cure, there is always a lingering concern about what’s coming next.

Fortunately, there is another way to manage asthma symptoms and help prevent sudden asthma attacks from even occurring. Infusion treatment for asthma has been a way to manage symptoms and restore quality of life.

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic condition in which the airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. As a result of these restricted airways breathing becomes very difficult.

In some cases, asthma attacks are caused by a reaction to allergens such as pollen. But for many individuals, the actual triggers for their asthma attacks are unknown. This means attacks can feel like they’re coming on without warning, dramatically restricting breathing and oxygen intake. Some individuals experience multiple asthma attacks per day.

In individuals with chronic asthma, the symptoms are the result of the immune system overacting. Normally, the immune system fights off infection and keeps the airways healthy. But with this type of asthma, the immune system goes into overdrive. This can result in regular sinus infection, nasal polyps, a reduced sense of smell, and more frequent and severe asthma attacks.

In addition to difficulty breathing, other symptoms of asthma include:

  • Coughing and wheezing
  • Chest tightening
  • Shallow breathing

The actual cause of asthma is unclear, but there seem to be some common triggers for symptoms. These include:

  • Exercise
  • Airborne irritants such as pollen, pollution, dust, mold spores, cockroach waste, or pet dander
  • Industrial irritants such as chemical fumes, gases or dust

While living with asthma and managing symptoms has traditionally been challenging, add on infusion therapy or injections can effectively keep symptoms under control.

How Can Asthma Be Treated?

While most people are familiar with using inhalers to treat the immediate symptoms of asthma, infusion therapy and injections help many patients prevent asthma attacks from even occurring. Therapy is administered on a regular basis, such as every 4 to 8 weeks. These can reduce symptoms, make symptoms less severe, and in many cases eliminate asthma attacks from occurring at all.

In an infusion therapy or injection medicine is administered directly into the bloodstream. This provides faster, longer lasting relief from symptoms than oral medication. Patients simply sit in a comfortable lounge chair, watch TV, and receive their treatment.

Is infusion treatment expensive? Patients who have had severe asthma attacks may know how expensive hospital-administered infusions can be. But infusions administered at clinics like Infusion for Health are significantly less expensive, costing 53% less on average for the same treatment.
